Description
A porous mass of malachite, essentially matrix-free, but with a few colourless gemmy calcite rhombs (to 3 mm) and very sparse microcrystals (circa 0.5 mm) of azurite on the reverse. Under magnification the malachite is seen to comprise minute acicular crystals forming aggregates, some of which are notably dendritic, suggesting they may have formed after native copper (?).
This was specimen 994 in the collection of Willem Klein, production manager at Tsumeb between 1916 and 1939. His catalogue records that it is from 14 Level at the bottom of the first oxidation zone.
