Description
A wide shallow vug in gossanous matrix hosts prismatic and tabular azurite crystals (to 20 mm). In one part of the vug (upper right in Exhibit 1) the azurite is lustrous and unaltered, while in the remainder of the cavity the crystals are completely replaced by malachite.
A monochrome image of this specimen was figured by Palache and Lewis (1927; their figure 31) to illustrate the observation that unaltered azurite occurs in close juxtaposition with crystals that have been completely replaced by malachite.
The specimen is from the collection purchased by Charles Palache during his visit to Tsumeb in December 1922, which dates it to the upper part of the first oxidation zone (i.e. 8 Level or above).
