Description
A single, equant, rhombohedral calcite crystal measuring exactly 40 mm on edge, perched astride a spongy mass of dendritic native copper, the surfaces of which are extensively encrusted with malachite. The calcite is colourless and transparent, but with some localised turbidity.
This 7.5 cm specimen was acquired from Rob Lavinsky in 2009 and belonged formerly to calcite collector Francis Benjamin. It is figured in the ExtraLapis edition on calcite as a quintessential example of a rhombohedral crystal (Huizing et al. 2003).
