Description

Colourless, transparent, prismatic crystals of aragonite (to 9 mm), randomly orientated in a vug on a brecciated quartz-rich matrix – possibly feldspathic sandstone (?).

Semi-quantitative EDS indicates that the aragonite contains approximately 11 wt % Pb (Frank Keutsch; Harvard University, 2025).

The specimen is from the Bill Pinch Collection but formerly belonged to Dr W. Schmidt of Kamen, Germany whose label (in German; Exhibit 2) indicates that he acquired it from P. Jung of Kirchen, Germany on 20 June 1936, which dates it unequivocally to the first oxidation zone.

Schmidt’s label describes the specimen as "Plumbocalcit … Tarnowitzit."
