Description

A single complex crystal of colourless to white anglesite (measuring 37 mm), equant in habit, partly gemmy, with some smaller crystals intergrown around the base. Minute inclusions of an undetermined mineral - possibly relict sulphide (?) - are present in the anglesite and their semi-regular distribution is clearly crystallographically controlled (Exhibit 2).

The specimen was originally in the collection of OMEG director Friedrich Wihelm Kegel (#148) who was general manager at Tsumeb between 1922 and 1932. The Kegel Collection was purchased from Kegel's widow for the Smithsonian in 1950 using funds from the Roebling endowment; the Smithsonian label is shown in Exhibit 3 and indicates that the specimen is from 7 Level in the first oxidation zone.

The story of the purchase of the Kegel Collection is recorded in detail by White (1977).
