Description

A shard of vuggy grey dolostone of which one face (Exhibit 1) is richly encrusted with dioptase crystals which are in turn almost completely overgrown by moss-green conichalcite-duftite. The reverse side (Exhibit 2) is encrusted with sugary grey dolomite, locally forming framboidal aggregates, and sparsely peppered with relatively inconspicuous (sub-mm) crystals of dioptase.
The specimen was number 1195 in the collection of Clement Victor Latz, which was donated to the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1976. There is no record of earlier provenance or location in the mine, but the paragenesis and vintage of the specimen are diagnostic for the second oxidation zone.
