Description

Curvilinear, orange-red smithsonite crystals (to 11 mm) on a matrix of partly silicified dolostone breccia. The smithsonite is unusual in terms of both its colour and habit. The cause of the intense, blood-orange colour is proibably due to minute inclusions of iron oxides while the shape of the crystals has sometimes been described as "pseudo-dodecahedral" or "analcime-like".

The specimen was purchased from Ian Bruce (Crystal Classics) and was formerly in the collection of Eike Patz. Its location in the mine is not recorded.
