Description

A rib of dolostone encrusted with dolomite, some of which has a nodular texture but which also includes hollow sub-spherical structures (to 45 mm diameter) – presumably epimorphs after calcite (?). The dolomite is multi-layered and includes a thin layer of Fe oxides – hematite (?) – close to the junction with the dolostone matrix (Exhibit 2) which probably accounts for the weak pink colour of the dolomite.

The insides of these epimorphs are lined with aggregates of white, rhombohedral dolomite crystals and also dusted with hematite (?).

The specimen was donated to MGMH by Carl Francis in 2005. It belonged formerly to Marshall Sussman. The location in the mine is not recorded.
