Description

A matrix consisting mainly of galena, unidentified iron oxides and quartz, hosts numerous small sprays of acicular blue crystals of munatakaite (Exhibit 2). Associated minerals include mimetite, plumboselite and smithsonite (all confirmed by EDS and Raman spectroscopy) and possible orlandiite (?) which is EDS indicated but not confirmed.

The specimen is from the Feinglos Collection but belonged previously to Shields Flynn, who bought it from Mathias Rheinländer in 2015, labelled as connellite. Flynn was suspicious about the connellite identification and submitted the specimen to the RRUFF Project for further study (RRUFF ID 150128), leading to the identification of munatakaite and the associated species listed here (Flynn et al. 2016).

There is no record of location in the mine but the association with plumboselite points to a probable second oxidation zone origin.
