Description
A vuggy sulphide matrix, with galena as the major constituent, hosts crusts of colourless smithsonite crystals and prominent aggregates of translucent, off-white to cream-coloured söhngeite. The söhngeite group at bottom centre (Exhibit 1) clearly shows the characteristic 90 degree "boxwork" twinning by which this mineral is readily recognised. The prominent galena cube (left of centre in Exhibit 1) measures 7 mm across.
Mark Fenglos acquired the specimen from Georg Gebhard, who had traded it out of the Technical University in Berlin. Feinglos believed it to be part of the specimen from which söhngeite was originally described (Strunz 1965) although there is no indication of this on either the Technical University of Berlin or the Gebhard label. The location in the mine is not recorded, but the paragenesis is definitive for the second oxidation zone.
