Size

Miniature; 43mm

Location in the Mine

Third oxidation zone; 44 Level

Collection

MGMH 2020.7.678

Provenance

Innes, J.; Gartrell, B.; Pinch, W.W.

Entry Type

Specimen TSNB526

A shard of cavernous massive sulphide ore, with several vugs containing sprays of bright orange acicular ludlockite crystals. One of the larger cavities hosts a spray of pale blue acicular köttigite crystals (to circa 1 mm), flanked by two contrasting sprays of ludlockite (exhibits 2 and 3). The matrix consists predominantly of tennantite and chalcocite with accessory quartz; well-formed microcrystals of chalcocite are present at the margins of some of the vugs.

The specimen is from the Pinch Collection (Exhibit 4); it belonged originally to TCL mineralogist John Innes and subsequently to Australian collector Blair Gartrell (Exhibit 5), whose collection was dispersed by Australian dealer Rob Sielecki in the mid 1990s. The specimen is from 44 Level in the third oxidation zone.

The köttigite has been verified by the RRUFF Project using single crystal XRD and its Raman spectrum is a RRUFF project standard for köttigite (RRUFF ID 110032). Raman and XRD spectra are available from https://rruff.info/kottigite/display=default/R110032; accessed November 2024).
