General Notes

Algodonite was first reported from Tsumeb by Pinch and Wilson (1977) based on a personal communication from Ulrike Kahn concerning a specimen in the collection of Walter Kahn.

Pinch and Wilson (1977) simply recorded the presence of "massive" algodonite at Tsumeb with no further information. Likewise, Weber (1977), in the same volume, included algodonite in his tabulation of Tsumeb minerals but with no annotation.

Keller and Bartelke (1982) noted that examples of algodonite from Tsumeb have no matrix and that the crystals are overgrown by drop-shaped blebs of native lead. They suggested that the specimens are of anthropogenic origin, produced in the Tsumeb smelter.

Algodonite is notably absent from more recent listings (Keller 1984; Lombaard et al. 1986; Gebhard 1991, 1999; Von Bezing et al. 2016; www.mindat.org, accessed October 2019).

The occurrence of algodonite at Tsumeb is therefore considered doubtful.
