General Notes
The first reference to heterogenite at Tsumeb was by Pinch and Wilson (1977) who described "Superb, bright black botryoidal masses to several kg [= kilograms] as well as lustrous black coatings on calcite crystals…".
Lombaard et al. (1986) included heterogenite as a "very rare" mineral in their list of Tsumeb species but without further comment. Keller (1984) and Gebhard (1999) included heterogenite in their species lists but with descriptions clearly following that of Pinch and Wilson (1977).
To the author’s knowledge no analysis of heterogenite from Tsumeb has been published but several putative heterogenite specimens have been analysed and found to be goethite.
Questionable status is therefore retained for heterogenite pending analytical confirmation.
