General Notes
Silver amalgam, containing c. 25 wt % mercury, occurs on 44 Level, in the third oxidation zone, where it is intimately intergrown with cuprite and associated with calcite, copper arsenates and malachite. XRD analysis indicates that eugenite (or a phase with a very similar structure) is present in the silver-amalgam (Gebhard and Schlüter 1994; Gebhard 1999). The silver amalgam has a characteristic yellowish colour attributed to the mercury content.
